Refactor model: inteference functions

t.knopff requested to merge refactor_model into develop

Some improvements in the usual way to disencourage the use of the string based interfaces. It's still incomplete but the next upcoming change will be a bit tricky.

Also for some related classes (e.g. FT distribution items) constants have been introduced for the class name, but are still unchanged otherwise.
