Refactor model: data properties and some other minor things

t.knopff requested to merge refactor_model into develop

Some minor improvements in the usual way to disencourage the use of the string based interfaces.

There are only a few changes but I pushed them because I stumbled upon some larger issues in InterferenceFunctionItems and wanted them to be finished.
