GUI broken: after simulation, no result is shown

The evil started with commit ba41010d of 12mar24. Unfortunately, a few days after that, I switched to other work. So I have forgotten many details. The big context is that the connection between instrument model and datafile needs to be rewritten from scratch. But why does this affect simulations without associated data?
